Obituary for Christopher G. Niess
Christopher Gerhard Niess of Concord died on August 20, 2014 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on April 5, 1963 in Dayton and attended Incarnation Elementary School in Centerville, Ohio and graduated from Lake Catholic High School in Mentor in 1981.
Chris was a career firefighter and paramedic dedicated to serving others. He was a firefighter at Concord Twp. from 1982 to 1989; he served the Mentor Fire Department as Lieutenant from 1984 to 1999. He started at Willoughby Hills Fire Department in 1991 and was promoted to Lieutenant in 1998 and became Captain in 2005, retiring in May 2013. Chris' passion was his family and fire service.
Survivors include his wife, Susan (Zeiger) Niess of Concord Twp.; children, Christopher, Sarah and Matthew; father, Ronald (Jan) Valparaiso, IN; sisters, Nancy Niess of Boardman, OH and Melissa Niess of Indianapolis, IN; brother, Craig (Kathy) Niess of Shaker Hts., OH;, sister-in-law Shelley Zeiger (Forest) Evans, brothers-in-law Scott (Allison) Zeiger and Steven (Mary Ellen) Zeiger, 7 nieces, 6 nephews, and 3 great nephews.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Christian and Kaye Niess; maternal grandparents, Clarence and Helen Dabbelt; and mother Barbara Dabbelt
Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 24, 2014 from 3-7PM at Painesville Assembly of God, 10949 Johnnycake Ridge, Concord with a Fire Fighter's Service at 6:30 PM. A memorial service will be held on Monday at 11:00AM at the church with an hour of visitation prior.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Mentor Safety Village Fire Museum, 7262 Jackson St., Mentor, OH 44060.
