Walter G, Kyle, Jr, born April 5, 1921 in Philadelphia, Pa passed away peacefully at his home Mar 13, 2016 surrounded by his loving family.
Beloved husband for 57 years of the late June (nee Wall); loving father of Phyllis Freed, Skip Kyle (wife Sharon), the late Tim Kyle (wife Suzanne) and Beth Hakli (husband Ron). Devoted grandfather to Jill, Chan, Briana, Samantha, Ashley and Josh. Devoted great grandfather to Gabrielle, Austin, Marissa, Chase, Savannah, Owen and the late Olivia.
Walter enlisted in the Army three months after Pearl Harbor. Trained in England in preparation for D-Day in the 411th AA Gun Battalion, 9th Infantry Division. Landed on Normandy Beach D-Day + 3, went on to fight in the Battle of the Bulge, Germany, Central Europe and the liberation of the Dachau Concentration Camp, receiving the Bronze Star. Walter mustered out in Philadelphia and met the love of his life, June, while she was attending nursing school. They married in 1947 and moved to Painesville, where they raised their family.
Walter worked at Ohio Rubber and TRW while establishing and growing Kyle’s Garden Center into a thriving business. He became a 32nd Degree Mason and an Eastern Star Worthy Patron in Painesville. He sold the business and returned to TRW as a supervisor and retired. They spent their winters in Florida fishing and enjoying family and friends. Summers were spent growing plants with Ray, helping Sharon and Skip start their own garden center in Chardon and helping Beth train students to care for the elderly. Through all this, he joined AA June 6, 1969. He loved going to meetings and helping others getting sober. Into his nineties, Walter was going to 5-6 meetings a week. It was his passion to share his time with those in AA. We thank Great Lakes Caring Hospice for their loving end of life care. They are truly special folks.
Family will receive friends for a viewing from 5-8 PM on Wednesday, Mar 16 at Johnson Funeral Home, 368 Mentor Avenue (opposite Lake Erie College) in Painesville. Funeral service to be held at First Baptist Church in Painesville, 10801 Johnnycake Ridge Rd., Concord, on Thursday at 11:00 AM. Afterwards, burial will be at Western Reserve Cemetery in Chester Twp.
