Janice L. Kirkland, age 80 of Mentor, passed away at home with her family. She was born August 2, 1936 in Mentor. She was a wife, a mom and a homemaker. She was employed at Mentor Schools where she was a baker for Memorial Jr. High School and Head Baker at Mentor High School along side her mom, Mabel Brown, who was the Head Cook at Mentor High. She retired from the school system in 1975.
She worked at the OGCA Shows for many years, retiring in 2015. She worked at the Hallmark Store part time, where she made special friends while working there. She loved cooking and taking care of her family. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were her most precious gifts.
Janice is survived by her husband of 62 years, Sherman M. Kirkland Jr.; sons Sherman M. (Mari Beth) Kirkland III, Daniel R. (Katie) Kirkland; daughter Cynthia A Kirkland Snyder; brother Greg "Peanut" (Denise) Brown; 7 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law Jackie Brown and Helen Brown; and brother-in-law Karl.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Mabel Brown; brothers Donald (Delores) and Robert (Terry); Carl "Bud" Brown; sisters Bonnie Brown and Margaret "Toni"; son Ronald James Kirkland and grandson Robert L. Hotchkiss Jr.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home, 368 Mentor Avenue (opposite Lake Erie College), Painesville.
A memorial service will be held Friday at 11:30 a.m. with Rev. Timothy Plavac of St. Bede the Venerable Catholic Church officiating.
Burial will take place in Mentor Cemetery.
